Ah, the age old question when it comes time to purchase a jointer/planer machine.

I am in the market to purchase a jointer/planer combo machine and I would like to get your opinions to help me decide if I should go with the machine that offers a 3-straight knife cutterhead or plunk down the extra $600+ and purchase the machine with the spiral cutterhead. I am looking at the Grizzly G0633 and G0634 machines.

- Is the spiral cutterhead really worth the extra cash? If yes, why?

If anyone has any opinions and/or experience on this topic, it would be much appreciated if you could help shed some light on this decision I am wrestling with at the moment.

Thanks!

Matt,
I guess the big ? is how much are you going to use it?
For myself being as I buy 95% rough lumber it is constant use. If you build cabinets and furniture the extra cost is justified. Most of the helical blades a also carbide, which increases thier life.
When you figure all it takes is a grain of sand to nick a cutting blade, now it leaves a scar on your product. the work to remove the scar, is a hassle.
Steel City has a really nice 13" planer you should check out it has a helical head for under $600.00
Sometimes it's hard to part with the coin, even more so now the way the economy is right now. But for me it has paid off.
