I read an interesting article in Handyman Magazine that I'd like some more feedback on. Should a receptical be installed ground pin up or down? Which way do you do it and why?

It is funny you mentioned this. I actually noticed at the hospital today all of the outlets have the ground up, and found it curious as nothing in here seems coincidence and I was sure there must be a reason. they also had some sort of color coding, which i imagine have to do with stuff on back up or redundant power sources.. My guess was that it had to do with fluids and dripping down the cords or something. Hope someone in the know will enlighten us about it soon. |

As for the hospital, i believe they have it upside down due to the fact that the recept might be two constant Hots. As for the color coding. Red Recepts means that it is back-up power. Its running of a Generator in case of a black-out. |

If you look at the wall plates in your house, you'll see that they all have the ground pin down. If you ever run across a right-angle plug (i.e. with the cord exiting from the side of the plug), the ground pin is, generally, at the bottom of the plug, so the cord can drop down with minimal distance to the wall. Thus, he socket needs to have the ground pin down also |
